Research-driven workplace infrastructure structured to support collaboration, acoustic stability, and sustained knowledge work.
Central Square Foundation is a policy and research-led non-profit working with the Ministry of Education to influence education systems, program design, and research frameworks across India. As the organisation expanded, the need emerged for a workspace capable of supporting high-intensity collaboration alongside deep research and analytical work.
The office was developed within an existing structural shell, requiring precise spatial planning to balance interaction, acoustic performance, and daylight quality. The workspace responds to behavioural patterns of policy researchers and strategy teams who shift continuously between focused work and collaborative engagement.
The resulting environment operates as a sound-sensitive and interaction-positive workplace supporting clarity of thought, efficient communication, and long-duration knowledge work.
The project reframes the role of central urban land by positioning the site as a multi-functional ecological and civic infrastructure system rather than passive green cover.
The workspace is structured to support both collective ideation and individual research focus. Open collaboration environments operate alongside enclosed meeting pods and acoustically controlled work zones.
Sound-isolated meeting rooms and call booths enable quick discussions without disrupting the larger workspace. These distributed micro-environments allow teams to move seamlessly between collaboration and focused work throughout the day.
Informal interaction zones including cafeteria seating and social spaces operate as natural knowledge exchange environments, supporting cross-team communication without requiring formal scheduling.
The visual environment is intentionally neutral to reduce visual fatigue and support cognitive clarity during extended working hours. Brand identity is introduced through controlled accents within furniture systems and soft finishes to maintain presence without distraction.
Indoor planting softens spatial transitions and supports workplace well-being. The environment operates as a calm visual field that supports research focus and long-duration analytical work.
Acoustic performance is treated as core infrastructure. Suspended acoustic panels absorb ambient noise while visually resolving exposed structural ceilings. The combined approach supports sound stability without compromising spatial openness.
Existing building constraints including low ceiling heights and exposed structural beams were resolved through performance-driven design strategies.
Acoustic βsound cloudβ panels balance ceiling height perception while improving sound absorption. HVAC systems were rerouted to improve airflow distribution and reduce stagnant air zones, supporting healthier indoor conditions.
Daylight performance is managed through diffused glazing and controlled shading, enabling natural light penetration without glare or visual fatigue. These combined systems support acoustic, air quality, and visual comfort simultaneously.
The workspace is organised around team behaviour patterns rather than conventional corporate planning models. Visitor movement is separated early through reception and external meeting zones to protect internal work environments.
A modular planning grid supports logical adjacency between teams while allowing long-term layout flexibility. Storage systems are separated between personal and institutional functions to improve spatial efficiency.
The office operates as a behavioural ecosystem where movement, interaction, and focus operate in balance across the workday.
The Central Square Foundation office demonstrates how research organisations can structure workplaces to directly support knowledge-driven work environments. The project aligns acoustic stability, visual clarity, and collaborative flexibility within a compact footprint.
The workspace supports quiet research and active collaboration simultaneously, enabling teams to operate efficiently across multiple work modes.
The project establishes a working model for NGOs, policy organisations, and research institutions seeking workplaces aligned with thinking, analysis, and long-term impact creation.
