Sarai Ghat War Memorial

Guwahati

The Sarai Ghat War Memorial commemorates the historic Battle of Sarai Ghat (1671 A.D.), where Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan led a decisive naval resistance against the Mughal forces on the Brahmaputra River. The memorial acknowledges this defining regional moment while also serving as a broader tribute to the sacrifices of Indian soldiers across multiple wars.

Located along the edge of Dighali Pukhuri Lake in Guwahati, the project occupies an environmentally sensitive urban landscape. The design responds to the existing terrain, lake edge conditions, and surrounding heritage context while establishing a distinct civic landmark within the city.

Layered Spatial Journey

+

The memorial is organised as a sequential spatial experience rather than a single monument. Visitors move through a series of levels that gradually reveal the central memorial space.

The upper deck aligns with the road level and functions as the primary arrival zone, offering panoramic views of the lake while introducing the historical narrative through landscape installations. A transition level connects the upper deck to the memorial plaza through ramps and stairways, where engraved walls present key moments from Indian military history.

The final level forms the lake-facing memorial plaza. Sculptural elements including the Ahom warboat installation, the warrior statue, and narrative relief panels depicting the Battle of Sarai Ghat anchor the central commemorative space.

Environmental Integration

+

Due to the ecological sensitivity of Dighali Pukhuri Lake, the project prioritised minimal environmental disturbance. Construction near the water avoids direct concrete contact with the lake, and dry construction techniques were adopted for structural elements close to the water edge.

Rainwater is filtered through natural media before returning to the lake, maintaining water quality and supporting groundwater recharge. Existing trees were preserved and integrated into the landscape design, reinforcing biodiversity and microclimate stability.

Symbolism and Spatial Expression

+

Material selection and spatial composition reinforce the historical narrative of the site. Stone textures and earth-toned finishes create a durable architectural character aligned with the surrounding landscape.

Changes in elevation and circulation paths subtly reflect the emotional progression associated with conflict and remembrance. The presence of water remains central to the experience, reinforcing the historic relationship between the battle and the Brahmaputra River.

Conclusion

+

The Sarai Ghat War Memorial demonstrates how commemorative architecture can integrate historical memory, landscape sensitivity, and public accessibility within a cohesive civic environment.

Through layered spatial planning and ecological responsiveness, the project establishes a reflective memorial space that connects visitors to regional history while contributing a lasting landmark to Guwahati’s urban landscape.
