Development Of Under Spaces At Peeragarhi Overpass
New Delhi
Overview
The urban sprawl of Delhi has seen an enormous pace in the last 15 years, creating an urgent need to respond through infrastructural development for better connectivity. New flyovers and traffic interchanges were created as mobility was difficult and congested. Overpasses had been developed to create free paths for main arterial roads.
However, it brought in a different problem with it of unused spaces. These urban voids placed in the heart of residential neighborhoods and often neglected leading them to convert into heaven for illicit activities.
The government saw the need to treat the space and use it as an opportunity, not only to eliminate such disturbance but also to enhance the appearance of the urban neighborhood. A trendsetting project, Peeragarhi introduced a new sensitivity towards growing urbanization about the use of spaces under overpasses.
Regenerating the space under the overpass & beautifying the area allows it to reconnect with the urban fabric. The project shall stand as an example of development in such urban voids.
Design
With a limited budget, the entire stretch was designed by landscape and surface treatment to activate the space. Plants were carefully selected considering light limitations. Water is very native to landscapes and provides a harmonious ambiance. However, being a maintenance intensive element, the effect was created through dry surface textures and riverbed stones. The whole theme depicted a river delta with a collective stream flowing out towards the main road.
The island created in between was installed with a police beatbox and pedestrian crossover with ramps leading to the street level. Planter islands with multiple elevation levels and stool type seating were designed to discourage misuse of these spaces during nightfall. Redundant pile heads that were left during construction and could not be demolished were also incorporated as a native element.
