Overview
The strategic role of design is universally recognized and is supported by the national policy of Govt. of India. The strategy to achieve this vision made the way to strengthen quality design education and usages of design in different sectors. Delhi Technological University had decided to provide facilities for excellent design education, research, and training to suit the needs of the society.
The base case starts by understanding the design field itself and how the paradigm has shifted in the past few years owing to the digital migration. So, when the other institutes were coping up with this change, the DTU design center was already having the digitally oriented environment. So the amalgamation of this modernisation with the culture is that a design field requires and is what is the basis of this
Concept
The design incorporated the presence of existing natural resources specifically the trees. This was the key factor in fitting the studios around the courtyard and building the corridor system to create the space which design culture requires.
The studios are created in a collaborative manner to facilitate the collective learning and they were IT enabled to maximise the laptop usages which every student requires. Other important facilities like library, workshop centers, research centers, etc were built up in such a way that the entire building is around the courtyard and corridors.
Design
The design is predominated by the existing trees which creates a natural environment inside the structure. The corridors, studios and all the geometries were built around the trees to amalgamate the social space into the design.
The building is designed as per LGFS structure to facilitate quick and speedy construction. It also allows provision for expansion both in vertical and horizontal limits of the building.
Perforated GRC was used to control the light because computer usage requires glare free and control illumination inside the buildings. This facilitates into elevations more explicit.
The courtyard is covered by GRC jaali to create beautiful light effect inside the open spaces. The studios are placed in such a way so that the footfall gets distributed. The building houses the administrative offices on the ground floor and the library on the first floor making the crowd get scattered.
Corridors are spacious and designed for airy wind movement bringing in the cooling effect inside. To top it all a flair of staircases winds around the trees creating a sense of exploration through the nature within the building thus making it stand apart from others.
