Sardar Patel Marg

Overview

Sardar Patel Marg, a prominent road in Lutyens Delhi zone, links central Delhi to the IGI airport. It is an important route for all dignitary movements and holds the residences of diplomats, state houses, embassies and hotels that host state guests including Presidents of other countries. So from the statement perspective, this road is the first entry to the modern Delhi holds strategic importance. The redevelopment design of the road required to capture this important in terms of what it projects.

Concept

Development of Sardar Patel Marg posed an exciting challenge. Demography along three 3 km stretch covers diplomatic community on the southern upper half, hotels and other hospitality sectors on the south lower half and northern side shared by a forest reserve. Each zone has a different requirement and demanded multiple review sessions with the stakeholders of the project during the planning and designing phases. The road is a fairly thin road compared to the traffic it handles and so while designing the emphasis was on traffic planning. It was aimed through a proper traffic plan to curb the congestion, where to make slip lanes for free left turns & also to give an easy pathway to the buses by having the bus stops at convenient locations.
