Overview

Campus 3 of IMS Ghaziabad group was the third major expansion of the IMS group for upgrading their academic courses. This campus came with a new challenge of itself- to be immediately visible from the National Highway. The client wanted that the building should spontaneously project its value and the sense of interest should be visible from the main road. Towards making it an iconic structure, the scale of the building was handled so as to get the maximum visual impact from the highway.

Concept

The primary aim of the design was to make the building stand alone. Making it physically and visually attractive, and this was made the basis of external planning. Internally because of low land profile the building was made high rise. This required to understand the movement up and down, the penetration of natural light and filling the spaces, how the hostels will be managed, the facade, etc.

Design

The site was having a narrow frontage and rather a deep breath. The campus was designed with academic building towards the front and residential like hostels and staff quarters towards the inner side.

The academic block was designed as a multistoried building with the natural and flowing facade on the outside. On the inside, it has a lot of atrium play, with corridors in the middle in a scattered format breaking the monotonous look. The whole building was designed having air conditioned classrooms with energy efficient walls to minimize the heat loss.

The native problem was the darkness in the center and the airflow for which the light was designed from the top allowing the natural light into the corridor.

The facade itself was developed as responsive towards light control and solar gain. Using high pressure sheets, the cutouts were informed by solar angle, openings behind and overall intended pattern. The building stands tall projecting a continuous wave which folds around the edges and binds the academic block. Due to its scale, panel contraction and installation required special engineering and management making it one of its kind.

The campus had a very inviting scene. At the moment somebody came in, on the left side of the block the entrance was designed slightly offset from the main side entrance to allow the transition happen when one walks into the campus from the road allowing to comprehend the campus.
